Hurricane storm surges results when the water level rises above normal as a result of a storm and therefore goes inland from the coast far deeper than it normally does.
Normally this can destroy things next to the coast by washing them away but some ecosystem services can provide protection against this such as an intact coastal wetland. Being intact, there are less chances of being washed away and as it is a wetland it is used to high levels of water and can even absorb some of the surge.
