Bernardino de Sahagun was a priest who became attached to the Aztec people in order to spread Christianity. He spent over 50 years studying the Aztecs and in that time learned their Nahuatl language and their beliefs, culture and history.

He then authored the<em> Historia General </em>which included a bilingual text of Spanish and Nahuatl as well as pictures to describe the text. The work contained the various beliefs and practices of the Aztec people and helped Europeans know more about the once great empire.
