An example of a modern-day hero would be people who act bravely during mass shootings and protect others. As mass shootings have become quite common, there are many examples of these in the media.

This idea is similar to that of Beowulf in the sense that these people also displayed courage and strength. Moreover, they were also tested against an evil force. While in this case it is a human and not a monster, the person still behaves in the cruel ways that monsters usually behave.

However, there are some differences between these situations as well. For example, the modern-day hero is admired because he did not cause harm to anyone. On the other hand, Beowulf is violent and he kills monsters. Moreover, selfish ideals such as glory and revenge are more present in Beowulf than they are in modern heroic stories.
