2. I'm not positive, but I would say: "...I had, of course, in the great tradition of tragic romance, chose to love a boy who was totally out of my reach."

Jim is depicted as being extremely unintelligent through the principal third of the novel. The trap that Tom and Huck play on Jim is completely cliché just like Jim's attestation of his insight into the villain and of superstition.
