A republican form of government is one in which the powers of government are held by the people. Elected leaders are given power by the people so leaders have to represent people and protect their interests.

James Madison supported a republican form of government since it recognizes the supremacy of public opinion and the guarantee of participatory politics. He thought that in a republic, majorities should prevail since the greatest threat comes from a minority.
