Once we leave the galaxy we will still be in space but it will be empty but not completely empty you would be surrounded by other galaxy's though they will be far, if we are able to advance technology enough we will be able to go throughout the universe.
Weathering is a slow process. It takes thousands of years to erode a rock or land mass. This is going on today with our beaches and the rocks in the ocean.
