Using the process of elimination, you can cross out answers A, (when you want to use a less wordy sentence construction) and C, (when you want the person or thing to perform the action), because A and C describe active voice rather than passive voice.

Passive voice usually lengthens the sentence by adding more words to it, and is used when you want to focus more on the action than the person doing it, meaning you would write the action being performed <em>by</em> the person, not the other way around.

Passive voice is usually not encouraged in writing, except when...

  • when you don’t know who is responsible for the action
  • when you want to be vague about who is responsible for something
  • when you want to focus on the action rather than the person doing it

Using what we know, answers B and D both are times when passive voice would be used and/ or recommended.
