I believe it is a metaphor. it compares 2 unlike things and it describes an action that isn’t literal.

I think the only part of our own life we can control is our own decisions and what we believe in. You can’t really control what happens to you and what doesn’t.
What prewriting does is when you are writing something it basically helps you write what your writing and be able to fix any mistakes you make, so that when you do write your final draft you wont have any mistakes on it. Trust me I should know, I am a writer! Hope this helps :D
