Loyalists were American colonists who supported the British monarchy, while Patriots rebelled against the British colony control during the American Revolution. Americans either remained Loyalists or joined the Patriot cause based on which side they thought would best promote their interests. Patriots wanted to free themselves from British rule while the loyalists supported the British monarchy instead of rebelling against them.
