It is perfectly acceptable to keep the stuff you know works, but maybe change the things that didn't work for the original colonists. Use your extra knowledge of what happened to fix their problems. e.g. most people died from the cold in the first winter, so maybe more building supplies and warm clothes rather than having a ton of shovels to find gold.
