By the provisions of the Teller Amendment, the U.S. would renounce any claims over the governing of Cuba but instead would allow the Cubans to come up with their own government instead of being under the Spanish. The Amendment essentially made the United States liberators rather than conquerors.

The Amendment left room for the acquisition of other Spanish territory however, which allowed the United States to take over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
