The Congolese people began to react to Belgian torture by calling for C. international help to deal with human rights violations.
From 1885 to 1908, King Leopold II of Belgium had a stronghold on the Congo Free state where he exploited the resources (rubber especially) of the local people and subjected them to hard labor. At that time, rubber was profitable and the Congo natives who were made to work at the plantations were given quotas or targets that they were to deliver. Failure to meet these targets resulted in the mutilation of their body parts as seen in the pictures.
These acts prompted an international cry for help. Roger Casement, a British Consul was instructed by the British government to investigate the human rights abuses in Congo. His eye-witness account resulted in the overthrow of King Leopold II of Belgium on November 15, 1908.
