In the nucleus of an atom, there are both Neutrons and Protons whilst the rings of the atom will contain the electrons.

The protons carry a positive charge and the electrons a negative one.

When the protons and neutrons are added together, these will give the mass number of the atom so the mass number of this atom is 32.

For a neutral atom, the Protons and the Electrons should be equal. Notice how there are 16 protons (+) in the nucleus and 16 electrons (-) on the rings.
