On May 1, 1898, in the first battle between Spanish and American Forces, U.S. Commodore Dewey and his Asiatic squadron defeated the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay in the Philippines.

The Spanish–American War was an armed conflict between Spain and the United States which occured in 1898.

The main issue was Cuban independence.
