That's because, the church dominated science, politics and economics in the Middle Ages and determined what could or could not be done or believed. Based on this, the church issued certain concepts about medicine, nature and the universe that should be accepted by everyone. Any scientific advance that showed that the concepts defended by the church were wrong, was quickly fought and exterminated.
