What are three grammatical functions of a clause?
Arisa [49]

Answer:

Adjective, adverb and noun

Explanation:

A clause is a group of words that at least have a subject and a verb, and that may be independent (It can stand by itself) or independent (It cannot stand by itself because it does not have full meaning). Dependent clauses may have one of the following three grammatical functions: Adjective, adverb, or noun.

 • Noun clause: It acts as a noun in a sentence, and they tend to be introduced by words like how, that, what, whatever, when, where, whether, which, whichever, who, whoever, whom, whomever, and why. For example: Whatever you tell me shall remain our secret.
 • Adverb clause: It modifies adjectives, verbs or other adverbs. This type of clauses often answers questions such as why, how, when, where or in what circumstances. For example: After drinking that much liquor, I felt sick. (When did you feel sick? A: After drinking that much liquor.
 • Adjective clause: It modifies a noun, by describing or giving extra information about that noun. It often answers questions like who or which one. For example: Stefano reached out for the cup of coffee that laid on the window sill. (Which cup of coffee? The one that laid on the window sill).

Dhofar is a fine city of great size and splendour lying about 500 miles north-west of Shihr. Here again the people are Saracens
dedylja [7]

Answer: The correct options are A and C.

The author is expressing a subjective perspective when it says :

“a very good port”

“very good” is not an objective point of view, it is not accurate in terms of precise information because the author is giving importance to its own feelings and believes, and not attending to real facts. The author is expressing his opinion about a port, which can be different from other person belief’s. It is just an interpretation of reality made by his own thoughts and emotions.

The same happens with option C:

“a fine city of great size and splendour”

In this case, the author is characterizing the city as “fine” which could also be “horrible” to another person, because it is based on the author feelings and belief’s. Moreover, “great size” it is not an exact measure, and readers do not know what the author considers great or small or to what is he comparing it too. In conclusion, both sentences give just and opinion and not real data.
