Answer:

First, it creates a feeling of something bad so D is incorrect. darkness implies despair or something bad, but the next phrase, "the hunting-cries to right and left and rear drew closer" give a feeling of being trapped. Since nothing bad does happen, B is also incorrect. And, the characters arent in despair. they aren't curling up into balls and wailing but they are on edge and fearful. They haven't given up hope yet. so that leaves the answer to be C. It creates a feeling of being trapped. Think about it, if some unknown figure of darkness was surrounding you and you couldn't see or fight it, how you you feel? I might be wrong, but that is what I think. Hope it helps!
