For example, look at this equation:

x + 3y = 16

See how there is no number in front of the x?

It can't be 0 in front of the x because 0 times anything is zero, right?

Therefore, it has to be a one.

So, the equation above could be written like this:

1x + 3y = 16

In mathematics it is just automatically assumed that if a term doesn't have a number in front of the variable, then the coefficient of that term is 1.
