The Appalachians are between 160 and 480 km wide. Some foothills extend all the way to northeastern Mississippi, making the mountain range over 2,600 miles.

The system consists of several massifs and the mountains are on average 900 meters high. The highest mountain is Mount Mitchell (2,040 m) in North Carolina, which is the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River.
