Slaves were never paid for their work, yet Johnson makes it seem like the slaveowners “provided for them” with housing... Johnson described the Republicans as “Radical” because they wanted to give rights to blacks. Johnson wanted to let the southern states decide everything, making sure whites kept all the power, and only whites would have rights.
