Caenorhabditis elegans is an approximately 1 mm long nematode (worm) that lives in the soil and eats bacteria such as Pseudomona

s. Scientists have determined that when C. elegans is hunting for food, the worms have different patterns of movement that depend on the location and quality of the food source. Scientists hypothesized that C. elegans might be attracted to certain chemicals produced by Pseudomonas. They tested this hypothesis by placing 100 C. elegans in the center of each of a series of petri dishes containing a layer of agar over which the worms could move. A drop of a test chemical diluted in ethanol was placed at one edge of each dish and an equal-sized drop of ethanol was placed at the opposite edge of the dish. The scientists determined the number of worms to reach each spot over a period of time.
(a) Describe why the location and quality of food sources in the soil are sometimes likely to stimulate random movements by C. elegans, but at other times are more likely to stimulate directed movements
(b) Justify the scientists’ use of two different spots on each petri dish and the counting of worms at each of the two spots.
(c) Under harsh environmental conditions, C. elegans produces a pheromone, a complex of molecules that affects other C. elegans. One effect of the pheromone is to cause developing larvae to temporarily arrest as larvae rather than mature to reproductive adults. Predict the relative amount of pheromone most likely produced by C. elegans that are only weakly attracted to one of the test chemicals.
(d) Provide reasoning to justify your prediction with respect to how the predicted amount of pheromone is beneficial to the worms that are only weakly attracted to the chemical.

Answer:

a)The response indicates that if C. Elegans doesn't find an adequate food source, it would stimulate random movement as they hunt. However, if they find an adequate food source, it would stimulate directed movement.

c)The relative amount of pherome produced by C. elegans that is only weakly attracted to one of the test chemcials is reduced

d)The response indicates that weak attraction to a chemical signals that the chemical is not produced by a good food source indicating that food is lacking in the environment. It also indicates that if food is lacking, it is beneficial for some larvae to undergo temporary developmental arrest until increased food can support more C. Elegans.

Kryger [21]

Answer:

Marriage practices vary widely and match societal values

Explanation:

Societies around the world demonstrate the enormous difference in cultural beliefs of family and marriage. Impressions about how people are related to each other, what kind of marriage would be ideal, when people should have children, who should care for children, and many other family-related matters differ cross-culturally. While the function of families is to fulfill basic human needs such as providing for children, defining parental roles, regulating sexuality, and passing property and knowledge between generations, there are many variations or patterns of family life that can meet these needs. This chapter introduces some of the more common patterns of family life found around the world.

Organized marriages were particular in many cultures around the world in the past including in the United States. Marriages are organized by families for many reasons: because the families have something in common, for monetary reasons, to match people with others from the “correct” social, economic or religious group, and for many other reasons. In India today, some people practice a kind of modified organized marriage method that allows the potential spouses to meet and spend time together before agreeing to a match.

Which sentence best describes the effect of the delegates' actions on European geopolitics?
suter [353]

Answer:

France was effectively contained by strong neighboring powers.

Explanation:

The results of the Congress of Viena created a new European landscape.

Delegates caused a reconfiguration of European geopolitical system:

Since European powers wanted to reset back to pre Napoleonic times, the goal of containing France was to restore the old limits and resize the distribution of land so they could create a way of balancing each other and remain in peace.

Metternich was one of the key delegates: he wanted to avoid future wars with France, so he restored power back to Europe's royal families and France was forced to return the territories it once gained from Napoleon in 1795, till 1810.

This meant that Russia increased its influence over Poland and Finland.

In the case of the Austrians, their power was limited in order to preserve peace.

The three most important problems with the articles of confederation (in your opinion)
dlinn [17]

Answer:

The Articles of Confederation comprised the United States’ first constitution, lasting from 1776 until 1789. The Articles established a weak central government and placed most powers in the hands of the states.

Under the Articles, the US economy faltered, since the central government lacked the power to enforce tax laws or regulate commerce.

Shays’s Rebellion, an uprising of Revolutionary War veterans in Massachusetts that both the state and national governments struggled to address due to a lack of centralized military power, illustrated the need to create a stronger governing system.
