I guess the theme is that you can't give somebody your work because Atlas was trying to give his work to Hercules which is a unresponsive thing to do and he's not taking responsibility for the work they gave him.
Rhetorical devices make the read think about what there reading. For example, "What would it feel like to fly", is a rhetorical question that makes the reader think. Of course the reader isnt supposed to respond to these questions.
