The first answer is that it was such a huge influence back in the day that provided such good scenes that it was perfect for artists.

Religion was such a huge influence is many artists life. The scenes promoted hope and miracles therefore it was perfect for the artists to depict. Also the bible is so detailed about events in the bible so it really gave the artist a clear picture of how to create it. The medium was good for still images and scenes.
