The water moves through a process known as Osmosis, which is the tendency of water to move towards a location that has a higher concentration of solute, in order to dissolve this concentration. Since the liquid inside the cell has a lower concentration of solute than the environment, the water inside the cell will escape through osmosis and can severely dehydrate the cell.
