Since you are adding both negatives then it will just stay negative. For example -1-1=-2

because adding a negative is the same thing as subtracting a positive, so the answer will be further negative than where it started.

also, you can tell because even if the 24 was positive, -38 is more negative than 24 is positive, so either way the answer will be negative.
