1. Writ of Habeas Corpus    

President Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of Habeas Corpus to ensure that dissidents were suppressed throughout the war.

He proved his mantle and became the right-hand man of General Lee as a result of him performing admirably in the 1st Battle of Bull Run where he inflicted heavy defeats on the Union by holding his soldiers steady.

8. Ulysses S. Grant      

Rose through officer ranks through a string of victories to become the Commanding (and winning) General of all U.S. troops during Civil War. Eventually became President as well.

9. Fort Sumter      

Even though the South had seceded, war had not broken out until the Confederates bombed a Union fort in South Carolina called Fort Sumter. This officially started the war.  

10. William Tecumseh Sherman      

His march to the sea from Atlanta to Savannah wrecked such heavy damage on the South that they lost morale to fight.  

11. Battle of Atlanta      

Atlanta, a center of Southern trade and commerce, was devastated in this battle.  

12. Battle of Vicksburg      

After a series of maneuvers and a siege, General Grant managed to capture Vicksburg. This gave the Union control of the Mississippi and split the Confederacy in two.  

13. Battle of Gettysburg      

General Meade defeated General Lee in this battle and it became a turning point in the war.
