Las membranas celulares están formadas principalmente por fosfolípidos, los cuales son<u> lípidos</u> compuestos por una molécula de glicerol con dos ácidos grasos unidos y un grupo fosfato. Los fosfolípidos se disponen formando una bicapa, dentro de la cual los grupos fosfatos (con mayor afinidad por el agua, es decir hidrofílicos) se orientan hacia el exterior celular y hacia el interior de la célula, mientras que las colas de ácidos grasos (hidrofóbicas, por lo que tiene mayor afinidad por sustancias no polares) se encuentran en la parte interna. Además, la membrana posee otro lípido: el colesterol, el cual tiene como principal función la regulación de la fluidez de la membrana.
