Merton’s theory suggested that they are five different ways people usually respond in these situations. <u>One of the systems is </u><u>retreatism</u><u>. </u><u>This means the individual largely rejects cultural norms, ideas, and goals, avoiding the ways to achieve them and adapt to them</u><u>.</u><u> They withdraw from society and abandon the institutionalized means of organization. </u><u>They do not find new goals nor institutions, just drop out of the existing ones.</u>
