How is estimating quotients different from estimating products?
tatyana61 [14]
Quotients can sometimes be irrational so it is necessary to estimate them, products on the other hand are only rational, provided they aren't multiplied by an irrational, so it is not necessary to estimate

Emma is playing miniature golf. Her ball is 2 feet to the left of the right-hand wall. The hole is 4 feet to the left of the wal
NISA [10]

Answer:

<u></u>

  • <u>She should aim 6 feet down the wall</u>

Explanation:

The diagram attached sketches the situtation.

Since the angle with which the ball hits the wall is the same with which it bounces, angle β is the same for the two shown triangles.

Then, since both are right triangles, then all the angles are congruent and the triangles are similar. Hence, you can equal the ratios of the sides, to make an equation:

  • x/4 = y/2 ⇒ x = 2y

You have other equation:

  • x+ y = 18

Substitute

  • 2y + y = 18
  • 3y = 18
  • y = 18/3
  • y = 6 ← this is the distance down the wall where the ball should hit

  • x = 2(6) = 12

Then, she should aim 6 feet down the wall.

Nolan is deciding between two truck rental companies. Company A charges an initialfee of $90 for the rental plus $2 per mile dri
kotegsom [21]

first we writte the information they are giving to us:

For company A:

initial fee = $90

rent per mile = $2

For combany B:

initial fee = $50

rent per mile = $3

Now for company A the equation that represent the charge in one mile will be: (where n is the number of miles)

\begin{gathered} A=90+2(n) \\ A=90+2(1) \\ A=90 \end{gathered}

And for company B:

\begin{gathered} B=50+3n \\ B=50+3(1) \\ B=53 \end{gathered}

Now to determine the number miles driven, that would make the cost of each company the same, we have to make A = B

\begin{gathered} A=B \\ 90+2n=50+3n \\  \end{gathered}

and finaly we can solve for n

\begin{gathered} 90-50=3n-2n \\ 40=n \end{gathered}

so if they drive for 40 miles the will pay the same
