1) Conditions for Tubman, as well as most slaves, were terrible. They were given little to no food, clothing, and rights. Not to mention, extremely racist attitudes were common at the time. Slaves worked long hours and were severely punished for disobeying, or for no reason at all. Tubman was injured when a heavy weight that was intended for another slave hit her on the head.
2) The Fugitive Slave Act was a piece of legislation that made it legal and mandatory for police officers and civilians in free states to pursue and/or turn in slaves that had escaped from plantations to free territory. It made it to where slaves were never guaranteed freedom, even if they were in a place where slavery was outlawed.
3) Many people compare Tubman to Moses from the Bible, for she led many slaves out of plantations to free territory in the same way that Moses led the Hebrews out of Egypt.
