Reconstruction was the period that followed the American civil war and during which attempts were made to redress the inequities of slavery and its political,social and economic legacy and to solve other problems arising from the reunion of 11 states. Huge economic depression and the desire to reduce the power gained by the national government during and after the civil war distracted the attention away from reconstruction process. Escalating levels of violence were promoted by the inability of people to accept and adapt to former slaves voting and holding office.
