One evening I was walking toward the edge of the lake in a swirling snowstorm. I was all alone. I couldn't see very far ahead. All of a sudden, I heard the hoot of an owl, I think. I jumped at the sudden noise, checking my surroundings in a spontaneous fear of something watching me. Then, I shuttered in fear. My gaze was locked toward two big yellow eyes. I..I couldn't speak. I just watched it. It stayed there for a bit, watching me. Suddenly, it lifted up in a fast motion and went up the trees. Fight or flight kicked in, and I ran back home. By the time I made it, my legs were sore and it was 4:32 PM. I shrugged it off as an owl just coming out to find food. Even though it was the middle of winter..during a snowstorm..when it should be hibernating- What am I talking about?

Monsters don't exist! ...

R-Right?

Based on "Civil Dis-obedience," what statement did Thoreau, like his modern-day successors, hope to make with his imprisonment?
Andrews [41]

Answer:

C). He wanted to suggest that one should be willing to go to great lengths for a belief.

Explanation:

Henry David Thoreau is the renowned American philosopher and essayist who is acknowledged worldwide for his transcendental thoughts and ideals reflected in his works. His work 'Civil Dis-obedience' reflects his fascination towards 'functioning of the jail'.

As per the question, option C displays the statement that Thoreau hopes from his modern day successors to make with imprisonment as he wished to imply that a person must be compliant and prepared enough to 'go to great lengths' for a belief which they find ethical, social, and virtuous. He urges his successors to believe in their conscience instead of laws. Thus, option B is the correct answer.

Exercise 1 Use the spelling rules in this lesson to spell the words indicated.
humble + -ly
otez555 [7]

The correct spelling of humble + ly is humbly.

The suffix -ly is added to the adjective humble to form the adverb humbly.

As a general rule, to transform an adjective into an adverb, we simply add the suffix -ly to the adjective after the last syllable.

For example:

  • kind → kindly
  • boring→ boringly
  • quick → quickly

However, in the case of adjectives ending in -ble, we drop -Le when adding the suffix -ly to form the adverb.

This is why the humble's adverb is humbly

Other examples of -ble ending adjectives + ly are:

  • agreeable → agreeably
  • memorable → memorably
  • considerable → considerably
