Religion played a key role in colonies that were established in New England. Many colonies were established by people who were exiled because of their religious beliefs. They grew crops such as pumpkin, squash, beans and corn. They also grew lots of tobacco and hemp. The major industries of that time were lumber, shipbuilding, trading and slave labor.The Parliament replaced the king and passed the English bill of rights which reduced the powers of the monarch. Parliament gained more power and colonists began to use colonial courts to control local affairs.
