Answer:

Cat runs 4 meters per second

Dog runs 3 meters per second

Step-by-step explanation:

Draw a picture, you should have a right triangle with hypotenuse of 10 m

The cat runs with a rate of x+1 m/s

The dog runs with a rate of x m/s

Formulas needed: d=rt and pythagorean theorem

distance cat ran = (x+1)(2s)

distance dog ran = (x)(2s)

(distance cat ran)^2 + (distance dog ran)^2 = 10^2

(2x+2)^2+(2x)^2=100

solve for x

x = -4 or 3 (exclude the negative answer cause its extraneous)

x=3, plug in to rate equations above and cat runs 4 meters per second

while the dog runs 3 meters per second

We take the equation d = -16t^2+12t and subtract d from both sides to get
                                         0 = -16t^2+12t - d
We apply the quadratic formula to solve for t. With a = -16, b = 12, c = -d, we have
                                         t = [ -(12) ± √( 12^2 - 4(-16)(-d) ) ] / [2 * -16]
                                           = [- 12 ± √(144-64d) ] / (-32)
                                           = [- 12 ± √16(9-4d)] / (-32)
                                           = [- 12 ± 4√(9-4d)] / (-32)
                                           = 3/8 ±√(9-4d) / 8
The answer to your question is t = 3/8 ±√(9-4d) / 8
