How an audience reacts to a film or performance all depends on how well it was produced, and the quality of the actors involved. When it comes down to it, the overall quality of any performance is dependant on how well the performers act, how they set the tone, their use of emotions, their gestures, etc. Every single small detail help play a part in the making of any act.
