In NIGHT chapter 6: Elie's father is chosen in the selection. In order to save him, Elie runs after him and in doing this he causes a commotion. The SS officers become confused and don't realize that Elie and his father both get themselves back to the "non-selected" group. This is how Elie is able to save his father.
