Por regla general, los países que tienen una alta proporción de población urbana son países que tienen una proporción de la actividad económica muy sesgada hacia la industria o los servicios, y como éstos dos sectores económicos tienden a ser más productivos que el sector primario (que se compone de agricultura, ganadería y minería), los países urbanizados también tienden a ser los más desarrollados.

Por ejemplo, en Alemania, un país desarrollado e industrializado, el porcentaje de población urbana es de más del 70%, mientras que en Burkina Faso, un país muy rural, y uno de los más pobres del mundo, el porcentaje de población urbana es de apenas el 30%.
