Kennedy and McNamara supported involvement in Vietnam and the number of military advisors that were sent to train Vietnamese troops increased from 900 to 16000. The gulf of Tonkin resolution enabled Johnson to declare war without the approval of the congress which further established that the US would fight in Vietnam. Nixon's Vietnamization was the cherry on the cake. It involved further waging war there and enabling the Vietnamese army to be better trained, as well as to improve relations and spread capitalism to others there.
