If there isn't suppose to be a space between salt and water then yes because a compound word is made up of two words that are combined.
It is "B", written incorrectly, because Brett said "They were beautiful." But after that it said "replied Brett." It should not have the period after "They were beautiful" but instead a comma. This would be how it would look if correct:
"They were beautiful," replied Brett. "But I wasn't close enough to take good pictures."

A sentence with the word "apple" in it could be:
"My sister and I love to eat an apple with our snack."
