Read the passage from Elizabethan Women. At the time, women were required to be utterly subservient to men, given limited educat

ion and career choices, and subjected to stringent rules of etiquette and dress. Queen Elizabeth herself is quoted as saying: "Better beggar woman and single than Queen and married." Elizabeth remained single throughout her life because marrying would have meant giving up her autonomy as monarch. The fact that even the queen had to take such measures to protect her access to self-governance illustrates the harsh plight of upper-class women of the time. Marriage

The fact that Queen Elizabeth herself said she would rather be a poor beggar and single than a Queen and married shows how much power a woman would have to give up when she has a husband. The only way she could maintain any independence was staying unmarried.

What are Ophelia’s, Laertes’s, and Polonius’s view of Hamlet?
mariarad [96]

Answer:

The fundamental reasoning behind Laertes' objections to Ophelia's relationship with Hamlet mainly lies in true care and concern for his sister while Polonius' objections lie mainly in his concern for his image and his power. Laertes' advice can be seen as a true desire for the well being of his younger sister.

Polonius sternly echoes Laertes' advice and forbids Ophelia to associate with Hamlet anymore. He tells her that Hamlet has deceived her in swearing his love and that she should see through his false vows and rebuff his affections. Ophelia pledges to obey.

Polonius always thinks Hamlet is crazy!

Ophelia indicates that she will remember Laertes's advice when she says, “I shall the effect of this good lesson keep”
