How do I find the slope of a perpendicular line?
Licemer1 [7]
Yes, math can be challenging sometimes (mostly due to the horrible way its taught by teachers but I wont go on a rant about that today).

The Slope of a parallel line is obviously going to have the same slope as the line it is parallel to, which you already know.

But for perpendicular, how would we figure that out?

First, you need to understand whats going on.  Picture a linear line.  Now, look at the (0,0) point.  To make it perpendicular, it must form 90 degrees with the other line.  Now, to get the answer for a perpendicular line, you need to remember two steps.

1.) Change the sign to the opposite sign (negative would go positive and positive would go negative)

2.) You take the reciprocal of the line (That is what times that number would make that number equal one.  2 * 1/2 would be 1.  You can also look at this by switching the denominator and numerator.

Rate of change is also called the slope.  This function goes 4 up for every 6 to the right, slope 4/6 = 2/3.  We choose the lines with slope greater than this.

Miko has a vast collection of books in her library. English books make up
k0ka [10]

Answer:

168 books

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

English = \frac{3}{8}

Chinese = \frac{5}{7} of the remaining books

Required

Determine the total number of books

If the proportion of the English books is 3/8, the the remaining is:

Remaining = 1 - English

Remaining = 1 - \frac{3}{8}

Take LCM

Remaining = \frac{8 - 3}{8}

Remaining = \frac{5}{8}

From the question, we understand that:

Chinese = \frac{5}{7} of the remaining books

This means:

Chinese = \frac{5}{7} * \frac{5}{8}

Chinese = \frac{5*5}{7*8}

Chinese = \frac{25}{56}

From the question, we also understand that 75 are Chinese books.

The total number of books can then be calculated using:

Chinese = \frac{25}{56} * Total

Substitute 75 for Chinese

75 = \frac{25}{56} * Total

Make Total the subject:

Total = \frac{56 * 75}{25}

Total = \frac{4200}{25}

Total = 168
