One of the main significant Union triumphs was then-Brig. Gen Ulysses S. Award's catch of Fort Donelson, situated along the Cumberland River in Tennessee. The Confederates at first shocked an assault by association gunboats, and arranged a striking counterattack against the Union soldiers to make a way for escape. The Confederates appeared to be nearly achievement when they stopped and withdrew to their strongholds. That gave Grant time to sort out a flimsy part in the Confederate line—and assault it.
