Omakayas is a Native American girl. She was adopted by a big family. She doesn’t know the story of her life. Everyone in her family has a job. Her dad, Deydey, hunts animals and sells their skins. Omakayas cleans the animal skins. Her grandmother, Nokomis, makes medicines to heal people. Each summer, the family travels by canoe to an island. There they build a temporary house made of birchbark.Often her mother asks her to fetch scissors from a neighbor. Omakayas loves the woods and water.
