Nunavut is Canadian territory. It is located in the northern part of the country. It is a territory that is slightly less than half on the mainland, and slightly more than half being composed of islands. The majority of this territory either lies in the Arctic Ocean or has a coastline to it, and a big portion of the territory is in the Arctic circle.
Such location means that Nunavut has a very cold climate, dominated by tundra. The ground is covered with ice for most of the year, and in the short period when the ice melts the soil is muddy and oversaturated with water, thus it is not stable at all. The people had to adapt to these conditions, so they are often building their homes on platforms, thus isolating the house/dwelling from the ice and soil. This is very useful for the stability of the homes, but it causes problems with the heating of them because the air that flows below the house cools it furthermore.
