Although she gets married to Killicks, his idea of a wife is more of a maid because that is what he expects from Janie. So mostly, Janie is really unhappy and sad, and she decided to leave Killicks for a man called Jody Starks and they run away. After sometime Starks dies and Janie is left alone but a substantial amount of money, she is at last independent and financially buoyant. After a period of time she meets a man called Vergible Woods known by the name "Tea Cake" and despite they have their ups and downs Janie is finally happy she finally has the marriage she had always wanted.
