Landform features: The area has major mountains on each side (therefore its name), several blocky mountains, basins, and plateau country. There is an extraordinary diversity of native species and flora. Red-rock deserts, forested meadows, and the Alpine tundra produce spectacular natural landscapes. One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon can be found here as well.

Climate: It is generally very dry, but subregions with different climates can be identified. These are: the sub-humid, semiarid, moderately arid and extremely arid zone. The subregions differentiate depending on the number of precipitations they each receive.

Economy: Irrigated farming is very successful. Cultivated crops include corn, potatoes, sugar beets, grass hay and alfalfa. Mining is an important contributor to the economy. Tourism has s significant impact. People from all over the world visit this region. Las Vegas is one of the main attractions and the largest metropolitan area in the Intermontane West. Gambling is legal there and illegal In many surrounding states.
