Jefferson went to great lengths to emphasize the distinction between state and federal power since he was afraid that the federal government would become too powerful and begin to resemble a monarchy.

4. Fugitive Slave Act (forced north to cooperate with slave owners)
5. Bleeding Kansas (Missouri pro-slavery men invaded and terrorized Kansas to force slavery)

Cotton played a major role in the social and economic life of the south because much of life was centered around this cash crop. Plantations in the south created enormous wealth for their owners who relied on slave labor to produce this labor intensive crop. The production of this crop fueled the slave industry which had an enormous impact southern society for centuries.
