Commoners were expected to serve as unpaid soldiers when necessary, and even supply their own equipment.

During the Early Republic, the society of Rome was divided among Plebeians and Patricians. Plebeians comprised of the common people, farmers and the workers. Patricians were the group of society with strong political power. The Patricians were not in the favor of the growth of the plebeians. The demand of equal and political rights of the plebeians were constantly crushed by the Patricians. As a protest, the plebeians refused to gave their effort to fight in the army. The commoners or the plebeians faced many difficulties during the early days of the republic.
