"Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. I drink at it; but while I drink I see the sandy bottom and detect how shallow it is.

Its thin current slides away, but eternity remains."

The impact of this excerpt shows that the person was very scared, being that they have never held a real gun for that long before, and the situation they are in is very dangerous and terrifying. They bring up the closet thing to it was a toy bamboo gun when they were seven, and this displays how once it was  a game, just a toy, and now it is real life.
