The war was brutal on both sides. U.S. forces at times burned villages, implemented civilian reconcentration policies, and employed torture on suspected guerrillas, while Filipino fighters also tortured captured soldiers and terrorized civilians who cooperated with American forces.
B. The Gadsden Purchase was the last major land acquisition prior to the Civil War. In 1853, the ten million dollar purchase made by U.S. ambassador James Gadsden completed the continental U.S. as we know it. Initially, the strip of land was viewed as necessary for the completion of a southern trancontinental railroad. Eventually, the Southern Pacific Railroad was constructed here.
The settlers came to America from England because they wanted religious, social and economic freedom.

During the American Civil War, the Union, also denominated the North, referred to the United States of America and particularly to the national government of President Abraham Lincoln and the 20 free states and four border and slave states that provided their support.
In the Union army, more than 179,000 African American men served in over 160 units, as well as more serving in the Navy and in support positions.
The first commanding officer to serve in the Union Ary was Martin Delany.
